Description

This Caramelized Onion and Gruyère Tart is a flavorful and elegant dish that combines sweet, savory caramelized onions with the nutty richness of Gruyère cheese, all on a buttery, flaky puff pastry. Perfect for Easter, brunch, or any special occasion, this tart is a delicious and visually stunning centerpiece that is sure to impress.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until caramelized and golden brown. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme.
  • Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface to fit your tart pan. Transfer the pastry to the pan and prick the bottom with a fork to prevent puffing.
  • Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the pastry, then sprinkle with grated Gruyère cheese.
  • Brush the edges of the puff pastry with the beaten egg to create a golden finish.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
  • Let the tart cool slightly before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Herb Variation: Add fresh rosemary or oregano to the onions for a unique herby flavor.
  • Cheese Swap: If Gruyère isn’t available, use Swiss cheese or aged cheddar for a rich alternative
