Description

Cheese Straws are the ultimate savory snack, combining the perfect balance of crispy, buttery, and cheesy flavors. These easy-to-make treats are ideal for parties, appetizers, or casual snacking. With just a few simple ingredients, these cheese straws are crispy, addictive, and customizable with your favorite cheeses or spices.

Ingredients

For the Cheese Straws:

1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup cold butter, cubed

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)

Ice-cold water (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine grated cheddar cheese, flour, baking powder, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).

  3. Cut in the Butter: Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the cold butter into the mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Add Water: Add ice-cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together.

  5. Roll and Cut: Roll the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness and cut into strips about 1/2 inch wide and 4–5 inches long.

  6. Shape and Bake: Twist the strips into spirals and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden and crispy.

  7. Cool: Allow to cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Spice It Up: Add extra cayenne or chili powder for a spicier version.

Cheese Variations: Try Monterey Jack, Parmesan, Gruyère, or Gouda for different flavors.

Puff Pastry Option: For a flakier texture, substitute the dough with puff pastry
