Description

Korean Steamed Eggs (Gyeran-jjim) are a silky, savory, and comforting egg custard dish that’s quick, healthy, and easy to make. This Korean classic is full of protein and flavor, with a soft, fluffy texture that pairs perfectly with rice and side dishes. A cozy, gluten-free option ready in under 30 minutes!

Ingredients

4 large eggs

1 cup water or broth (chicken or vegetable)

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1 green onion, finely chopped

Salt to taste

Optional add-ins: diced vegetables (carrots, zucchini), seafood (shrimp, crab), kimchi

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs until smooth and fully combined.

  • Gradually whisk in the water or broth for a consistent texture.

  • Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, and salt to taste.

  • For the smoothest result, strain the egg mixture through a fine mesh sieve.

  • Bring a pot of water to a gentle simmer and place a steamer rack or heatproof bowl inside.

  • Pour the egg mixture into the bowl, cover, and steam for 15–20 minutes, until the eggs are set but still jiggly in the center.

  • Garnish with chopped green onions. Optional: drizzle extra sesame oil or sprinkle sesame seeds before serving.

  • Serve warm with rice and other Korean side dishes.

Notes

Add gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) for a spicy version.

Seafood like shrimp or crab can elevate the flavor.

Vegetarian additions like mushrooms, spinach, or cheese also work great.

Best served fresh, but leftovers can be gently reheated.
