Description

Salisbury Steak is a quick, comforting dish featuring juicy meat patties served with a rich mushroom gravy. It’s perfect for weeknights, and paired with mashed potatoes, it’s the ultimate comfort meal.

Ingredients

For the steaks:

1 cup mushrooms, finely chopped

1 large onion, chopped and divided

1 & 1/2 pounds ground beef

1 egg

1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons tomato paste

2 tablespoons whole grain mustard

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)

1 & 1/4 teaspoons kosher salt

3/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 tablespoon oil, for frying

For the gravy:

1 tablespoon butter

2 & 1/2 cups sliced mushrooms

1 teaspoon minced garlic

2 & 1/2 cups beef broth

2 & 1/2 tablespoons flour

1 teaspoon whole grain mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Parsley, to garnish

Creamy mashed potatoes, to serve

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the onion and mushrooms. Set aside 1/4 cup of the onion for the steaks and finely chop the rest for the gravy.
  2. Make the Steaks: In a large bowl, combine the 1/4 cup finely chopped onion, chopped mushrooms, ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, tomato paste, mustard, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke (if using), salt, pepper, and onion powder. Mix everything together until well combined.
  3. Shape the Patties: Shape the mixture into 6 oval patties.
  4. Cook the Steaks: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 2 minutes on each side until browned. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  5. Prepare the Gravy: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions for 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauté for another minute.
  6. Make the Gravy: Whisk together beef broth and flour in a small bowl. Slowly add this mixture to the skillet while whisking. Add mustard and Worcestershire sauce, then cook for 2 minutes until it starts to simmer.
  7. Finish Cooking the Steaks: Return the steaks to the skillet and simmer for 5 minutes until cooked through and the gravy thickens.
  8. Serve: Sprinkle with parsley and serve with creamy mashed potatoes.

Notes

Substitute mushrooms with diced onions or your preferred vegetable if you don’t like mushrooms.

For a vegetarian option, use plant-based meat for the patties.

Feel free to add red wine to the gravy for a richer flavor.

If you prefer heat, add cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the gravy.

Make sure the patties are cooked thoroughly; the internal temperature should be 160°F (71°C).
